The University of Computer Science (UCI) presented at the 17th International Fair Informatica 2018 version 6.0 of Nova, a Cuban distribution of GNU / Linux, aimed at satisfying the need of Cuba of moving towards an open source platform.
Yunier Vega Rodríguez, commercial specialist of the Direction of Technology Transfer of the UCI, told the AN that this new version has among its purposes to achieve sovereignty and technological independence in a safe manner, at a time when the country is promoting the informatization process of the society.
Currently in the world, the main promoter agencies of proprietary software use distributions of GNU Linux to mount their servers, because of the security they offer, said the specialist.
However, he said, although the tools are similar, and even in many cases superior to other operating systems, there is reluctance to use them, and the main obstacle is resistance to change because of the large volume of information that needs to be processed.
In its version 6.0, Nova improves the graphical interface aimed at facilitating interaction among its customers, incorporates new applications such as the pidgin for chat, a mail client "evolution" local, as well as tools to share files, he said.
Among its advantages, he mentioned that it has drivers to connect to all printers in the country with different technologies, even the most obsolete ones, in the hands today of the business or organizational sector.
Vega Rodríguez said that, based on surveys conducted by the UCI, improvements were introduced such as the menu, which has a fresher and more current image focused on the standards of international standards currently used in operating systems and mobile environments.
The Cuban distribution Nova 6.0, he explained, integrates Nova Ligero (Light) and Nova Desktop in the same system, which allows the user to choose which one to install, taking into account the performance of his device.
According to the manager, it can be installed in approximately 60 languages and has several versions aimed at different audiences.
The 17th International Fair Informatica 2018, which takes place at the Pabexpo fairgrounds in Havana, will conclude this Friday.
